چکیده

Local Lorentz invariance is at the foundation of both the Standard Model of particle physics and General Relativity, but is generally poorly tested for the latter theory. Violation of Lorentz symmetry would break the isotropy of spacetime, permitting the vacuum to fill with ‘background’ fields that have a preferred direction. Interaction of the test masses in a terrestrial gravity experiment with these fields could result in a sidereal modulation of the force between the masses, thus providing a test of Lorentz invariance in gravity. A quantitative description of Lorentz violation consistent with local field theory is given by the Standard-Model Extension (SME), which has recently been expanded to include gravitational effects. The expression for the potential between two test masses m1 and m2 in the ‘pure gravity’ sector of the SME is given by:

Enhanced sensitivity to Lorentz invariance violations in short-range gravity experiments

Recently, first limits on putative Lorentz invariance violation coefficients in the pure gravity sector were determined by the reanalysis of short-range gravity experiments. Such experiments search for new physics at sidereal frequencies. They are not, however, designed to optimize the signal strength of a Lorentz invariance violation force; in fact the Lorentz violating signal is suppressed in...

Experimental Design for Testing Local Lorentz Invariance Violations in Gravity

Local Lorentz invariance is an important component of General Relativity. Testing for Local Lorentz invariance can not only probe the foundation stone of General Relativity but also help to explore the unified theory for General Relativity and quantum mechanics. In this paper, we search the Local Lorentz invariance violation associated with operators of mass dimension d = 6 in the pure-gravity ...

Overview of the SME: Implications and Phenomenology of Lorentz Violation

The Standard Model Extension (SME) provides the most general observer-independent field theoretical framework for investigations of Lorentz violation. The SME lagrangian by definition contains all Lorentz-violating interaction terms that can be written as observer scalars and that involve particle fields in the Standard Model and gravitational fields in a generalized theory of gravity. This inc...

Lorentz Violation as a Quantum-gravity Signature *

Many theoretical approaches to quantum gravity predict the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry at Planck energies. Kinematical cosmic-ray studies are a sensitive tool in the search for such effects. This talk discusses the construction of test dispersion relations for such analyses.

Probing Lorentz Symmetry with Gravitationally Coupled Matter

The Standard Model of particle physics together with Einstein’s General Relativity provide a remarkably successful description of known phenomena. General Relativity describes gravitation at the classical level, while all other interactions are described down to the quantum level by the Standard Model. However, a single quantum-consistent theory at the Planck scale remains elusive. Ideally, exp...
